T-Series Biography

Gulshan Kumar founded T-Series in the year 1983. It was started as ‘Super Cassettes Industries Private Limited’ and later converted to ‘T-Series.’ It is India’s biggest music label company and one of the top Indian movies production houses. As of 2020, T-Series holds 70% of India’s music market. T-Series also has the world’s biggest and mightiest YouTube Channel with more than 162 million subscribers and 132 billion views.

T-Series wasn’t this big from the start. Gulshan Kumar started this company as a cassette selling company that used to record Bollywood soundtracks on audio cassettes and sell it at the open markets. The company gradually converted into a music-making company and started to make and sell its own music. Gulshan Kumar saw the Indian devotional music industry’s nerve and realized the lack of a big player. He started making and recording Hindu devotional songs through his label, and they are instant-hits.

During the 1990s, the valuation of T-Series, as a music production company, grew exponentially. In 1985, T-Series’s annual revenue was $16 million, and in 1991, it went up to $88 million. In 1997, it further grew up to $140 million. The demand for good music was increasing in Bollywood, and T-Series was there to provide it. It started signing up singers to work under its label. Kumar Sanu, Lucky Ali, A. R. Rahman, Anwar, Babul Supriyo, Arijit Singh, Asees Kaur, Adnan Sami, Alka Yagnik, Gulzar, and many other artists worked with T-Series in its projects.

In 1997, Gulshan Kumar was murdered by D-Company, one of the underworld’s mafia syndicates. After he dies, the company’s chairman position was passed to his son Bhushan Kumar. Bhushan Kumar was just 19 when he took over the company. He is currently the chairman and managing director of the Indian music giant. The company’s annual turnover is more than $200 million each year. T-Series provides thousands of employment opportunities in India as well as foreign. T-Series is also the mother company of 29 other regional channels like T-Series Tamil, T-Series Gujrati, T-Series Haryanavi, and others.

In 2016, T-Series was in a race to become the first-ever YouTube Channel, which crosses 100 million subscribers-count. It was against a sole content creator from Sweden, PewDiePie. The content was hyped as the race to superiority. Last, T-Series went on to become the first channel to cross the 100 million subscribers-count. However, it had to go through a lot of negative publicity around the world. A giant multinational company competing against a solo content creator is a scene that people usually do not want to see.

The net worth of more than $500 million is the contribution of music albums, movies produced, and YouTube earnings. In fact, T-Series’s 40% of total wealth is generated by its YouTube channel. That’s a massive chunk of total wealth that comes from an online platform. T-Series has produced and co-produced many superhit movies such as Aashiqui, Patiala House, Ready, Aashiqui 2, Airlift, Hindi Medium, and many others. ‘Ready’ starred Salman Khan and made more than $25 million worldwide. Another movie, ‘Aashiqui 2’ was a huge hit, mainly because of its music. It went on to earn $15 million worldwide. ‘Airlift’ starred Akshay Kumar and was a blockbuster hit. It was co-produced by T-series and made $33 million globally.

In 2019, T-Series partnered up with UV creations on its most expensive film ‘Saaho.’ The movie made $58 million at the global box-office. T-Series gets some of the biggest chunks of its wealth by co-producing such movies with bigger banners. It takes a minimal risk and reaps maximum rewards. The business model of T-Series makes it one of the most powerful companies in India. It also launched new artists under its label. Himesh Reshammiya was one of the artists who was launched under the T-Series banner. He went on to become one of India’s most popular singers. Also, the Punjabi sensation Guru Randhawa owes his fame to T-Series. His music videos are still the top played music videos on T-Series’s YouTube channel.

In 2019, T-Series made Spotify one of their partners so that they can harness the power of this global music streaming app. With this partnership, T-Series’s songs were made available to the 200 million users of Spotify. T-Series is also working to make some business deals with OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazone Prime.
